I wonder why so many people hate to do homework !

Homework or home-task is a bitter pill to many students.Schools,as a rule, set home-tasks.They are given to make the boy work at home.It serves another purpose also.It is to help the student to revise what has been done in the class. All schools set home-tasks some more, some less.It is only a matter of degree.

However, bitter it may be,must be some home-task given.Education and mastery of knowledge,is a matter of skill. There are skill subjects and knowledge subjects. Both these catergories require drill and repetition. The teacher,to some extent, drills the student in the class. But in the classroom each individual student cannot expect the same amount of drills as each one may require. So the student will have to do that at home.

Home-task need not necessarily be repeating what has been done in the class. It may be more study. The student goes through references and acquires more and better knowledge. The world of knowledge is so wide that the class alone cannot bring everything into the grasp of the student. So the student must take up some initiative of his own. This may be one of the purposes of home-task.

The school also must see that the student is not overburdened on one day and left free on others. The teachers must see to it that the home-task is distributed throughout the week.Still there are subjects like mathematics or transcription in the lower classes which require daily attention. There are others which can be attended to during the weekend, for example, map making, drawing the diagrams and so on.

Simply because there is difficulty for some boys, the home-task cannot be abolished. It cannot be a matter of vote.If some students find it inconvenient at home to do their home-tasks,the school must come to their resue. They must provide some facilities in the school,so that the boys can conveniently attend to their home-task.Boys do not like home-tasks because some of them are too weak to do them.In such cases, the teachers must come willingly forward to help such of those boys, who need help.

It is not a question of abolishing the home-task.It is a question of making it sweet and workable to the student. The teachers in their goodness must solve this problem.

Have you ever been sick and bed-ridden?One may not wish to be sick or bed-ridden.Still it is an experience.Unfortunately for me,I had such an experience last year. When I began sneezing one fine morning,I never thought I would be going in for a protracted illness. That evening I had some temperature and pain in the joints. My mother prepared the usual medicament gave it to me and made me go to bed early. The next morning I could not at all get up from bed.I was running high temperature and severe pain in the joints.People in the house suspected whether I might be going in for small-pox or such a thing.Still, they got the mixture from the hospital,I was kept on diet. The same condition continued for three more days.So our doctor friend advised my being admitted in the General Hospital. After the formalities,I was given a bed in the general ward and I was kept under observation.

The experience was novel to me but it was very irksome when a number of doctors, one after another came and examined me.Remember it was a general hospital,so there were many doctors, some recruits included. So I felt very much annoyed when I had to stick my tongue out for these doctors. In between there were nurses who strutted about in their starched uniform.A chart was maintained about my health. My blood was examined and then my stools also. Many were the surmises that were made. Some said it was a strange fever that started in Singapore. Some said it was paratyphoid. So they were pricking me with different types of injections.By this time, the novelty of being in the hospital wore away.I got fed up with the smell of dettol, the cheerless look of the ward and the very scene of different types of patients lying there.Somehow, the injections began to work.My temperature came down to normal. So I was advised to go home and take rest. What a relief from boredom of the hospital after a fortnight there.

Man is a bread winner and woman the keeper of the home.Man fights the battle of life, which is no easy task, for it is attended with many failures and disappointments.Woman comforts him in such circumstances and encourages him to fresh efforts with renewed vigour and energy. This has been the arrangement of family life in the past and will continue to be so,so long as women represent love, kindness and sympathy. As long as she retains her womanly virtue, she is an angel improving the lot of man and leading him to high ideals and noble deeds.

The importance of woman in the life of a country cannot be over estimated. The idea that the home is a woman's only proper sphere has disappeared with the spread of female education. She is now equal partner in life with man and it would be doing her grave injustice is she were denied her rightful place in society. She must have an equal chance in life and be allowed to have her say in all matters of importance. There are many problems in which she may be interested and of which she may have better knowledge. Her taking part in these would lead to better and far reaching results. Her views on child welfare, maternity, widow marriage, female education and the like, are likely to be more valuable than those of man.It has been proved beyond the shadow of doubt that organization for the advancement of women, which women themselves have set up in recent years in different countries have done much good to humanity.

There is no denying that woman is an equal partner with man in all affairs of life.It is,therefore, expected that she will take part in politics too.She must be allowed to give her opinion in legislative matters, being equally a subject to the State. It will serve to complete the otherwise incomplete picture of man's politics. She has the same political rights and privileges as man and must be allowed to exercise them for the progress of the whole nation. In intellect she is in no way inferior to man and there is no reason why she should not prove her worth in political life.Women have shown themselves to be a wise politicians, scholars, poetessess, orators, lawyers, judges and administrators.History tells us that women like Queen Elizabeth,Queen Victoria,Mrs.V.L Pandit(sister of late Prime Minister of India,Mr.Nehru) and many others proved to be highly capable and they have won prominent places in political history.

But the picture of the relation between man and woman in Asia and Africa is a deplorable one. While Mrs.V.L Pandit,Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Mrs. Bandaranaike are doing much useful work to uphold the name of the women in Asia, the vast majority of women in Asia and in Africa are like caged birds. They are ignorant of world events and uninterested in the changes of the outside world. They are not allowed to go beyond the daily roution of their household duties. To make the women in Asia and in Africa as equal partners in life,we have to provide every possible facility for their education and intellectual and moral development. It is essential for a better and fuller life for the nation.Time demands that women in these countries should occupy their rightful place in the home and the country.
